Information for Schools and Teachers

"Who dares to teach must never cease to learn." John Cotton Dana

Barb teaching

School is one of my favorite places and I’ve spent lots of time there as a student and as a teacher. I'd love to talk to your school about writing or spend a day as a visiting author.

Please contact me to arrange a school visit. Honorariums start at $250 plus expenses depending on the number of presentations, length of time and the distance traveled from Chicago’s northwest suburbs.

Here are some sample program descriptions. I will be happy to work with staff to develop a program specific to your curriculum needs:

"Step One: Put Butt in Chair"
We’ll answer the question, "How does an author write a book?" Multimedia presentation about the world of writing, publishing and printing. Perfect for classrooms working on their own publishing project. For early grades K-3, classroom or large group.

“10 Ways to Get Inside a Dead Person’s Head: Writing Biography”
No more boring biographies allowed. We’ll learn ten tips for telling true stories about real people. Based on my book Fearless.  3rd grade and up, classroom groups.

"Writing As Loud As You Can"
What is voice in writing? We’ll look at ways to explore the different voices that live inside all of us, and practice a few exercises to get those voices shouting! Good for schools using Six Traits Writing. Better for middle grades 4-6, classroom groups.

"Just Do It... Over!"
A draft workshop. Professional writers draft stories over months or years or sometimes even decades. This workshop will give the more experienced writer a sense of what to look for in their own drafts. Hint: it’s not just punctuation anymore. Middle School, 5-8, classroom groups.

“Save the Earth: A Beginner’s Guide”
Based on my book Teedie & Johnnie. Using videos and photos, we’ll learn a little about the history of conservation in the United States. Focuses on practical ways kids can help the earth. Tailored to any age, any group size.
